ProTip of the Week 11/30/11

What do I say to my customer when my competition lies about me, my product, or my company?  Take the high road, and don't try to rectify or justify what was said.  Rather say, "We can't be responsible for other people's irresponsibility.  Our responsibility comes from our years of delivering quality, delivering on time, servicing memorably, and creating a valuable partnership between ourselves and our customers."  Then provide testimonials in support of your company.

- Jeffrey Gitomer, The Little Red Book of Sales Answers

In business, as in life, lashing out at those who insult or wrong you tends to backfire.  If a customer comes to you with incorrect or hurtful information your competitors said about you, attacking your competitors will only make you look defensive.  Instead, take the opportunity to win your customers over by focusing on what is true about you and your company, and all the ways you can meet (and exceed) their needs.  Refuse to be part of the mud slinging your competition has started and you can turn a negative into a strong positive.
